IPL 2025 Retention Day: Key Players, Updated Rules, and Increased Auction
IPL 2025 Retention
As the IPL 2025 retention deadline approaches, teams are gearing up to finalize their list of retained players. With just three days left, all 10 Indian Premier League franchises – including Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants – will submit their retention lists by October 31..
IPL Retention Regulations for 2025-27
This year’s retention rules allow each team to retain up to six players, either through standard retention or the Right to Match (RTM) card. Of these, a maximum of five can be capped players, Indian or overseas, with up to two slots available for uncapped players. These updated guidelines come after thorough discussions between the IPL governing council and franchise representatives, marking a more strategic approach to team building ahead of the upcoming mega auction.
Enhanced Auction Purse and Salary Cap
To enable more flexibility in squad composition, the BCCI has increased the auction purse to ₹120 crore per team, up from ₹110 crore last season. Additionally, the salary cap, which includes the auction purse and performance-based payments, is set to rise in increments over the next three years: ₹146 crore in 2025, ₹151 crore in 2026, and ₹157 crore in 2027. These changes aim to ensure more robust squad investments and fair player compensation.
Major Rule Update: Capped Indian Players’ Status Change
A significant rule update is set to impact player availability this season. Indian players who have not appeared in the playing XI for international matches (Test, ODI, T20I) or do not hold a BCCI Central Contract over the last five calendar years will be reclassified as uncapped. This rule applies exclusively to Indian players, potentially adding a layer of strategy to franchise retention choices.
As the retention deadline nears, stars like MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul remain in focus, with franchises considering all factors to build competitive teams for IPL 2025. The finalized lists will set the stage for the mega auction, where new and returning talent will look to make their mark in the world’s premier T20 league.
