Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to shake up the compact SUV segment with its upcoming Escudo model. Expected to launch by the end of 2025, this new entrant is set to take on heavyweights like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Codenamed “Y17” internally, the Escudo will slot right between the Brezza and Grand Vitara in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup.
What makes the Escudo interesting? Originally planned as a 7-seater, Maruti Suzuki shifted gears to a 5-seater format based on market demand. This puts it directly in the crosshairs of the Creta and Seltos, who currently dominate this space. The Escudo will be available through Maruti’s Arena dealership network.
Under the hood, expect some serious power. The Escudo will ride on the same Global C platform as the Grand Vitara. Reports suggest a 1.5-litre petrol engine delivering 101.65 hp and 130 Nm torque. There’s talk of CNG and hybrid variants too, with the hybrid possibly pushing out 113.97 hp. Transmission options could include five-speed manual, six-speed automatic, and e-CVT configurations. Buyers might also choose between 2WD and 4WD setups.
Inside the cabin, Maruti’s pulling out all the stops. Ventilated seats? Check. Panoramic sunroof? Likely. Safety gets top billing with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS, and ESC. Tech lovers will appreciate the rumored 10-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging and a digital instrument cluster could sweeten the deal.
Price-wise, expect the Escudo to land between INR 9-10 lakh ex-showroom. Maruti’s reportedly gunning for that coveted 5-star NCAP rating too. With its mix of features, specs, and competitive pricing, the Escudo might just give its rivals a run for their money when it hits Indian roads next year.
