MI vs DC: Suryakumar and Bumrah Power MI into Playoffs

Mumbai Indians stormed into the IPL 2025 playoffs with a commanding 59-run win over Delhi Capitals, riding on a masterclass from Suryakumar Yadav and clinical spells from Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah. Suryakumar’s unbeaten 73 off 43 balls, which included a brutal final flourish, was the backbone of MI’s 180, before Santner and Bumrah ran through DC’s lineup under overcast skies at Wankhede. With this result, Delhi’s rollercoaster season came to a screeching halt.
Delhi, who began their campaign with four consecutive wins, crumbled once again in a high-stakes contest. Chasing 181, they lost KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis early, never recovering from the early blows. Will Jacks teased with his spin, but it was Santner who turned the screws in the middle overs, spinning a web with his 3 for 11. Bumrah, ever the big-game player, matched the performance with an equally miserly 3 for 12, crushing any hopes of a late DC surge.
Earlier in the evening, MI’s innings had stalled at 132 for 5 before Suryakumar and Naman Dhir unleashed carnage in the final two overs. Mukesh Kumar’s cramps didn’t help as he leaked 27 in the 19th over, and Chameera couldn’t contain Suryakumar’s rampage in the 20th. The pair added 48 runs in 12 balls, flipping the momentum MI’s way and setting up a total that would prove far too steep for the struggling Capitals.
Suryakumar’s knock also saw him equal the record for most consecutive 25+ scores in T20s, a testament to his consistency amid MI’s turbulent season. For DC, however, it was another tale of what-ifs. Vipraj Nigam showed promise with the bat and ball, and Rizvi added some late fireworks, but their top order’s collapse and inability to counter MI’s spin punch cost them dearly. The loss leaves Delhi out of the playoff race after winning just two of their last nine games.
With this win, MI not only sealed the final playoff berth but also made a statement about their resurgence. Their core players have clicked at the right time, and with the likes of Suryakumar, Bumrah, and Santner peaking in form, they could be dangerous contenders in the knockout stage. For Delhi, the postmortem begins early, and they’ll look back on missed opportunities and a campaign that promised much but delivered little.
