Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finally broke their Chennai jinx with a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), thanks to Harshal Patel’s 4-wicket haul and Kamindu Mendis’ all-round brilliance. Chasing a modest 154, SRH stayed composed on a sluggish surface and sealed their first-ever win in Chennai against CSK. The result not only snapped their losing streak but also revived hopes of a turnaround in their IPL 2025 campaign.
The tone was set early by SRH’s bowlers, particularly Harshal, who exploited the middle of the pitch masterfully. Despite a promising start from CSK’s youngest batter Ayush Mhatre and a sparkling 42 from debutant Dewald Brevis, CSK faltered in the middle overs. Harshal’s clever variations and Kamindu’s ambidextrous spin dried up the runs, and Pat Cummins applied the finishing touches with two economical overs in the death.
Brevis did offer CSK some hope with his aggressive strokeplay, taking on Kamindu for three sixes in one over. But the South African’s brilliance was undone by a moment of magic—Kamindu leapt to pluck a stunning one-handed catch at long-off, arguably the best grab of the season. From there, CSK never recovered, struggling to find the late flourish as SRH bowlers tightened the screws.
SRH’s chase had its nervy moments. Early strikes from Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj kept CSK in the hunt, and Ishan Kishan’s 44 was a hard-fought effort on a pitch offering grip. But once he fell, Kamindu stepped up again with a composed 32* off 22. Along with Nitish Reddy, he ensured there were no late hiccups, guiding SRH to a comfortable finish with eight balls remaining.
The win not only ended CSK’s stronghold at home but also handed them their fourth loss in Chennai this season. For SRH, it was a victory of patience, planning, and execution—offering hope that their campaign might just be back on track.
