PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal-Paris Olympic
In a major announcement on Monday, July 8, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that badminton superstar PV Sindhu will be the female flag bearer for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. Table tennis legend Sharath Kamal has been named the male flag bearer. Most of the Indian athletes have already arrived in Paris, eagerly preparing for the opening ceremony, which is just over two weeks away.
Gagan Narang
Olympic medalist Gagan Narang will serve as the Chef-de-Mission for the Indian contingent, taking over from boxing great MC Mary Kom. “I am also delighted to announce that India’s only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, will be the female flag-bearer alongside table tennis ace A Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony,” said Usha, emphasizing Sindhu’s outstanding accomplishments.
Since the Olympics protocol change in 2020, every country must name both a male and female flag bearer. At the Tokyo Olympics, Mary Kom and former hockey captain Manpreet Singh held this honor. While Sharath Kamal’s role was confirmed back in March, the announcement of the female flag bearer was delayed until now.
Mary Kom’s decision to decline the role of Chef-de-Mission led to Gagan Narang stepping in. Narang, who won a bronze medal in the 10m air rifle event at the London Games in 2012, is now poised to guide the Indian team in Paris.
“I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” Usha added confidently.
With close to 120 athletes participating, India is aiming to surpass its previous medal tally and clinch multiple golds in Paris. The excitement is palpable as the Indian contingent prepares to showcase their talent and determination on the world stage, led by their distinguished flag bearers and Chef-de-Mission.
