Toyota has locked in the global debut date for the next-generation Fortuner. The full-size SUV will break cover on December 1, 2026, with a market launch in India expected sometime in 2027. The confirmation comes from CarMag South Africa, which cited an official statement from Toyota South Africa. While Toyota India has not yet announced a formal timeline, the new model is widely anticipated to arrive here within a year of its global reveal, following the typical product cycle for this segment.
Design changes expected for the new Fortuner
Test mules spotted in Thailand under heavy camouflage reveal that Toyota plans to keep the proven IMV ladder-frame platform while refreshing the exterior skin. The front end is likely to get a more upright grille with strong vertical slats, a raised bonnet line, and slimmer headlamp units that borrow cues from the latest Hilux. Pronounced wheel arches and integrated side steps suggest the rugged stance will remain. At the rear, spy shots point to a redesigned tailgate and a connected LED light bar, though the final tail-lamp layout is still hidden under wrap.
Interior and feature upgrades
The cabin is set for its most significant update yet. Reports indicate the new Fortuner will adopt design elements from the current Hilux, including a larger floating touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a revised steering wheel with the Toyota wordmark on the centre pad. A panoramic sunroof is also expected, addressing a long-standing request from buyers. On the safety front, a more comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense suite could bring Level 2 ADAS functions such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist to higher variants.
Powertrain details remain familiar
Mechanically, the new Fortuner is expected to carry over the current 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 204 PS and 500 Nm, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. Four-wheel-drive will continue to be offered on diesel variants. A 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 166 PS and 245 Nm, also mated to both transmissions, is likely to remain in the lineup. No hybrid or electrified powertrain has been confirmed for this generation.
India launch timeline and positioning
India is expected to receive the updated Fortuner in 2027, though the exact month and variant configuration are yet to be announced. Pricing will likely be revised upwards to reflect the added equipment and design work. The SUV will continue to compete in the premium body-on-frame segment against the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, and the upcoming Volkswagen Tayron. With its global debut just weeks away, more concrete specifications and market-specific details should surface in the coming months.
The next-generation Fortuner appears to be an evolution rather than a revolution. By retaining the ladder-frame architecture and trusted diesel powertrain while modernising the design, cabin technology, and safety systems, Toyota aims to keep the Fortuner relevant for buyers who prioritise durability and off-road ability alongside contemporary features. The December 1 debut will provide the first official look at how far that evolution has gone.
