Maruti Suzuki India has reported a strong sales performance for September 2026, with utility vehicles emerging as the standout growth driver. The country's largest carmaker recorded total sales of 2,36,013 units during the month, marking a 24.4 percent increase compared to 1,89,665 units in September 2025. This growth was broad-based across domestic sales, exports, and passenger vehicle segments, but the utility vehicle category delivered the most impressive numbers.

Utility vehicles lead the charge

The utility vehicle segment, which includes models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Invicto, Victoris, XL6, and the e Vitara, recorded sales of 78,911 units in September 2026. This represents a 62 percent year-on-year jump from 48,695 units in the same month last year. The segment's growth rate was the highest among all passenger vehicle categories, confirming the continuing shift in buyer preference towards SUVs and crossover-style vehicles.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales, comprising passenger cars, utility vehicles, and vans, stood at 1,81,838 units, up 37 percent from 1,32,820 units a year earlier. Within this, passenger cars across the mini, compact, and mid-size categories also grew steadily, reaching 91,887 units from 74,090 units. Models in this space include the Alto, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, S-Presso, Swift, WagonR, Ciaz, and Ignis.

Domestic and export performance

Total domestic sales, including sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), rose to 1,91,794 units from 1,47,461 units, a 30 percent increase. Exports grew modestly to 44,219 units from 42,204 units, up 4.8 percent. However, sales to other OEMs declined sharply to 6,542 units from 11,750 units, a drop of 44.3 percent. The Super Carry light commercial vehicle added 3,414 units, growing 18 percent year-on-year, taking total domestic sales including LCVs to 1,85,252 units.

Van sales of the Eeco remained stable at 11,040 units, up from 10,035 units a year earlier.

First half FY27 shows sustained momentum

Domestic passenger vehicle sales for the half-year stood at 10,80,240 units, up 35.4 percent from 7,95,446 units. Utility vehicle sales for the six-month period surged to 4,55,692 units from 3,17,379 units, a growth of 43.6 percent. Exports for the half-year rose to 2,32,855 units from 2,07,459 units, up 12.2 percent.

Total production in September 2026 was 2,42,011 units, compared to 2,01,915 units in September 2025.

Market context and outlook

The strong utility vehicle performance aligns with broader industry trends where SUVs and crossovers continue to gain share. Maruti Suzuki's expanded UV portfolio, spanning compact SUVs like the Brezza and Fronx to three-row offerings like the Ertiga and XL6, and premium models like the Grand Vitara and Invicto, has allowed the company to address a wide range of price points and use cases. The newly listed Victoris and the e Vitara further widen the lineup.

Chairman R C Bhargava had earlier highlighted rural development as a key factor behind the company's market share gains, noting that rural market share increased significantly. The company's capacity expansion, including the commissioning of the second plant at Kharkhoda, has supported higher production and sales.
