Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd has delivered its strongest quarterly performance yet, with Q2 FY27 marking a historic milestone for the company. The automaker reported total sales of 201,723 units across domestic and international markets, representing a 40% year-on-year increase from 144,397 units in Q2 FY26. This growth significantly outpaced the broader industry, which saw Vahan registration volumes rise approximately 24% during the same period.

The standout performer was the electric vehicle segment. EV sales, including both domestic and international volumes, surged 90% year-on-year to 47,150 units in Q2 FY27, up from 24,855 units in the corresponding quarter last year. In September alone, EV sales climbed 67% to 15,384 units from 9,191 units a year earlier. This momentum has pushed EV penetration within Tata Motors' portfolio to 23%, a figure that stands in sharp contrast to the industry average of roughly 8%.

Record Quarter Driven by Green Powertrains

The company's domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 196,674 units in Q2 FY27, a 40% increase from 140,189 units in Q2 FY26. Compressed natural gas vehicles added another layer to the company's alternative powertrain strategy. CNG models recorded their highest-ever quarterly sales and accounted for 28% of total volumes. Together, EVs and CNG vehicles contributed 51% of Tata Motors' quarterly sales, highlighting a decisive shift toward cleaner mobility options within the portfolio.

Product Portfolio Expansion and Brand Evolution

During the quarter, Tata Motors expanded its lineup with the Curvv SeriesX, Sierra Legend Series, and the all-new Tata Aeris. These launches build on introductions made in the first quarter of the fiscal year. The Punch continued its strong run, emerging as India's highest-selling SUV during Q2 FY27.

The company also unveiled a new customer-facing identity, TATA.CARS, as part of its broader brand evolution strategy. This move aims to strengthen direct engagement with buyers and streamline the ownership experience across digital and physical touchpoints.

Industry Context and Demand Drivers

According to Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, passenger vehicle demand sustained the momentum observed following the implementation of GST 2.0, despite Q2 being a seasonally softer quarter. He noted that industry Vahan volumes grew around 24% year-on-year, led by increasing adoption of greener powertrains. This trend provides a promising backdrop for the upcoming festive season.
