JSW MG Motor India has marked a strong start for its new Hector Tomahawk lineup with 50 electric units handed over to customers in Surat on a single day. The delivery milestone comes alongside the market debut of the plug-in hybrid version, which the company claims can cover more than 1,100 kilometres on a full tank and a fully charged battery. The PHEV is priced from Rs 25.70 lakh ex-showroom, while the all-electric variant starts at Rs 19.49 lakh ex-showroom.

Both models are built on MG's new ADAPT architecture, a flexible platform designed to support battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, range-extended electric, and hybrid powertrains. The Hector Tomahawk is the first product to use this architecture in India. The electric version uses a 69.2 kWh battery pack paired with a 150 kW motor producing 310 Nm of torque. MG claims a MIDC range of 517 kilometres for the EV.

The plug-in hybrid takes a different approach. It combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with a 20.5 kWh battery and a permanent-magnet electric motor. The engine produces 102 hp and 125 Nm, while the motor develops 201 hp and 237 Nm. The total combined output is rated at 198 hp and 230 Nm. Power is sent through a dedicated hybrid transmission with an e-clutch. MG states the petrol engine has a thermal efficiency of 43.2 percent.

Electric-only and combined range figures

The PHEV can travel more than 115 kilometres on electric power alone, according to the manufacturer. With the battery fully charged and the fuel tank full, the claimed combined range exceeds 1,100 kilometres. MG also quotes a combined fuel efficiency figure of over 40 kilometres per litre. The EV variant offers a 517 km MIDC range on its larger battery.

Four drive modes for the PHEV

The plug-in hybrid operates in four modes that switch automatically without driver input. In Pure EV mode, the electric motor drives the wheels using battery energy. Series Hybrid mode uses the petrol engine to recharge the battery while the motor drives the wheels. Parallel Hybrid mode engages both the engine and motor together for maximum performance. Engine Direct Drive lets the petrol engine power the wheels directly to reduce conversion losses during highway cruising. MG claims the system can transition between modes in as little as 0.1 seconds based on speed, throttle input, battery charge, and road conditions.

Charging options

For the PHEV's 20.5 kWh battery, a 3.3 kW AC charger takes about 7.5 hours to go from 10 to 100 percent. A 25 kW DC charger can replenish 30 to 80 percent in roughly 35 minutes. The EV's larger 69.2 kWh battery supports faster DC charging, though specific times were not detailed in the launch information.

Seating configurations and dimensions

The electric Hector Tomahawk is offered in both five-seat and seven-seat layouts. The PHEV is available only as a seven-seater. The SUV measures 4,745 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,770 mm in height, with a 2,810 mm wheelbase. These dimensions make it longer than the Mahindra XUV 7XO (4,695 mm) and the Tata Safari (4,668 mm), giving it a sizeable footprint in the three-row segment.

Boot space varies by configuration. The seven-seat EV offers 192 litres behind the third row, expanding to 528 litres with the third row folded. The five-seat EV provides 610 litres of luggage capacity.

Interior and feature highlights

Both variants share a minimalist cabin dominated by a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a free-standing 8.8-inch digital driver's display. A flat-bottom two-spoke steering wheel and a large floating centre console with storage, cup holders, and a wireless charging pad complete the front layout. Soft-touch leatherette materials are used on the dashboard and door pads.

Features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, gesture controls for climate and audio, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered front seats, a powered tailgate, 256-colour ambient lighting, a 10-speaker Infinity sound system, connected car technology, rear window sunshades, and a memory function with auto-retract for the driver's seat. Safety equipment comprises six airbags as standard, a 360-degree camera with transparent-bonnet and wheel-view functions, and a Level 2 ADAS suite.

The PHEV gets a different interior colour scheme compared to the EV, which the first-look review described as an improvement over the beige upholstery seen on the electric version. Both driver and front passenger receive electronically adjustable seats.

Pricing and Battery-as-a-Service

The Hector Tomahawk EV starts at Rs 19.49 lakh ex-showroom. It is also offered under a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme with an introductory price of Rs 13.99 lakh plus a battery rental of Rs 4.90 per kilometre.

The PHEV is available in two seven-seat variants: Exclusive 7S at Rs 25.70 lakh and Essence 7S at Rs 27.80 lakh, both ex-showroom. The BaaS option for the PHEV starts at Rs 21.79 lakh for the Exclusive 7S and Rs 23.89 lakh for the Essence 7S, with a battery rental of Rs 3.20 per kilometre. These introductory BaaS prices apply to a limited number of bookings.

Bookings for the PHEV have opened, with deliveries scheduled to begin in November 2026. The EV deliveries are already underway, as evidenced by the 50-unit handover in Surat.

Market context and sales momentum

JSW MG Motor India reported August 2026 sales of 7,508 units, a 14.14 percent increase year-on-year. Over the trailing 12 months, the company has retailed 76,958 vehicles, up 9.40 percent. The new Tomahawk twins are expected to contribute to further volume growth in the coming months.

The Hector Tomahawk PHEV enters the market as India's first mainstream plug-in hybrid SUV. It rivals three-row offerings such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari on size, while its powertrain technology has no direct equivalent at this price point. The EV version competes with electric SUVs like the Tata Harrier EV, Mahindra XEV 9e, and Kia Carens Clavis EV.

The combination of a strong delivery start for the EV and a unique plug-in hybrid proposition positions the Hector Tomahawk range as a significant launch for JSW MG Motor India in the premium family SUV segment.
