Mumbai Indians (MI) finally opened their account in IPL 2025 with a resounding eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. The win propelled MI to sixth place on the points table, while KKR sank to the bottom, struggling to find form. Chasing 117, MI’s batting unit ensured there were no hiccups. Rohit Sharma fell early for 13, dismissed by Andre Russell, but his opening partner Ryan Rickelton played a match-winning knock. The South African batter remained unbeaten on 62 off 41 balls, smashing four boundaries and five sixes. He was well-supported by Suryakumar Yadav, who played a blistering cameo of 27 off just nine balls. With MI’s aggressive approach, the chase was completed in just 12.5 overs, sealing a comprehensive victory for the home side.
The match not only gave MI their first points of the season but also highlighted the emergence of Ashwani Kumar as a potential bowling spearhead. His ability to generate pace and precision under pressure will be a significant asset for MI in the upcoming fixtures.
