The used car market in India is changing fast. Buyers no longer need to choose between a risky private purchase and an expensive new car. A new wave of dealer-backed warranty programs is bringing factory-grade confidence to pre-owned vehicles, and the shopping experience is going phygital — a blend of digital convenience and physical dealer support.

For years, certified pre-owned (CPO) programs from manufacturers set the standard. Brands like Honda, Hyundai, and GM offered multi-point inspections, extended powertrain coverage, and roadside assistance. But these programs were often limited to younger, lower-mileage vehicles sold through franchise dealers. If you wanted a seven-year-old sedan or a higher-mileage SUV, you were mostly on your own.

That gap is now closing. General Motors has launched CarBravo in the United States, a platform that merges its Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC CPO operations into a single omnichannel experience. CarBravo lets shoppers browse, finance, and buy online, then visit a local dealer for test drives, trade-ins, and delivery. Every vehicle — whether a GM brand or not — goes through a comprehensive inspection and reconditioning process. Buyers get roadside assistance and access to GM's nationwide network of over 4,000 service centers.

CarBravo operates two tiers. The Bravo Tier covers vehicles up to 10 years old with fewer than 100,000 miles. It includes a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty that starts after any remaining factory warranty ends. The Budget Tier stretches further, covering vehicles 10 to 15 years old with up to 150,000 miles. It provides a 30-day or 1,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, bringing dealer-backed confidence to older cars often sold "as-is" elsewhere. Since its launch, CarBravo dealers have sold over 200,000 vehicles, with certified volume running 2.3 times higher than traditional CPO. More than 750 dealers across all 50 U.S. states are enrolled.

This model matters for India because it shows where the industry is headed. Indian buyers increasingly research online, compare prices, and expect transparent vehicle history. At the same time, they value the ability to inspect a car physically, negotiate face-to-face, and know a local workshop stands behind the warranty. A phygital platform delivers both. You can shortlist cars on your phone, check inspection reports, and calculate EMIs, then walk into a dealership that already knows your preferences and has the paperwork ready.

Dealer-backed warranties differ from third-party service contracts in important ways. Manufacturer and dealer programs typically use genuine parts, factory-trained technicians, and authorized service networks. Claims are handled through the brand's own system, not an outside administrator. Many CPO warranties are transferable, have zero deductible, and include extras like trip-interruption reimbursement, free maintenance visits, and loaner cars during repairs. Third-party plans can be cheaper and more flexible on vehicle age, but repair shop networks vary, and claims-paying reputation must be vetted carefully.

When evaluating any dealer-backed warranty, check the inspection checklist. GM brands use 172 points. Acura's Precision Certified runs 182 points. Hyundai checks 173 points (179 for EVs). Ask whether the warranty is exclusionary (covers everything except listed exclusions) or inclusionary (covers only listed components). Exclusionary plans offer broader protection. Confirm the deductible structure — per visit or per component — and whether you can use any authorized service center. Verify transferability if you plan to sell before the warranty expires.

The phygital approach also solves a long-standing trust issue. The Federal Trade Commission's Used Car Rule requires dealers to display a Buyer's Guide window label disclosing whether a vehicle is sold "as is" or with a warranty. In many states, "as is" sales limit implied warranties, leaving buyers exposed. Dealer-backed certified programs replace that uncertainty with written, enforceable coverage. GM's CarBravo, for instance, provides a 12-month bumper-to-bumper warranty on Bravo Tier vehicles and a 30-day powertrain warranty on Budget Tier vehicles, both backed by the manufacturer's dealer network.

For Indian consumers, the takeaway is clear. As organized used-car retailers expand — whether manufacturer-backed platforms or large multi-brand chains — expect more vehicles to come with dealer-backed warranties that combine digital transparency with physical service support. Look for programs that offer comprehensive inspection reports online, clear warranty terms in writing, and a local service network you can reach easily. The phygital revolution means your next used car can come with the kind of peace of mind that used to be reserved for new vehicles.
